New Jazz Underground is an American trio known for blending traditional jazz with modern influences like swing, hip-hop, house, afro-beat, and afro-Cuban music. Comprised of Abdias Armenteros (saxophonist/composer), Sebastian Rios (bassist/composer), and TJ Reddick (drummer), the trio was formed while they were students at The Juilliard School. They gained attention in 2020 by performing in NYC parks and posting viral videos on YouTube, where they now have over 85k subscribers. Their releases, including MF Doom Suite, Harlem to Havana, and cook/swing/work/relax, showcase their reverence for jazz icons while pushing genre boundaries. New Jazz Underground was named the 2023 DCJazzPrix Winner, solidifying their place as one of jazz’s most innovative and promising acts.
